An entrepreneur(s) got idea, developed from the scratch, launched alpha version and product become acceptable my masses and then entrepreneur(s) wants to welcome (recruit) people to join the growing demand for the product. Then recruiting process become more challenging.
Following are the recruiting strategies for startup’s:
1] Passion First, Talent Second:
Look for the guy who is really really passionate about technology, who is willing to learn new technologies. Talent can taught and it can be learned but Passion cannot. He should be passionate about the his own job not for company because the whole big product is crumbled down into manageable jobs/modules, if those jobs/modules get done by those passionate guy(s) then product become acceptable in the market and ultimately the company become profitable.
Most of Indian engineers are passionate about the company or band name and they are ready to do any job in that company even though that job is not interesting. If job is not interesting for them, then ultimately there is no productivity which leads to losses to company.
2] Look for young guy:
For startups, one should look for young people because they don’t have family burden or so. Young people are alone and they are more focused to one thing: The Work, nothing else.
3] Don’t hire based on specific Key skills [Eg: Struts, HTML, C++, etc]:
Startup’s should look for people who are willing to learn new technologies with passion. He should be hungry to know new technologies. If you hire based on specific key skills, the person may be reluctant to learn new technologies [ which startup required to compete in the market ] because he already have hands on experience on that technology.
4] Hire based on project’s or contribution made to open source.
Look for the people who have done some projects but not 1 or 2 projects. If he has done so many projects then that shows (s)he lot of interest in programming.
5] Look for the person who can handle multiple roles [by Himanshu Sheth ]
Look for the person who is willing to do multiple jobs without hesitation because startups has more work to do with minimum resources. So it is better to recruit a person who handles multiple roles so that the maximum work can be achieved with minimum resources which will be cost effective too.
